Lorenz Chen wins International Henri Marteau Violin Competition 2017


Lorenz Chen has won the Sixth International Henri Marteau Violin Competition in Hof, Germany. The 23-year-old Taiwanese-German violinist receives €10,000 and a recording produced by Bayerischer Rundfunk, in addition to the €1,000 audience prize.

Second prize, worth €7,500, goes to 21-year-old Yukino Nakamura from Japan, while third prize, worth €5,000, goes to 24-year-old Stepan Starikov from Russia.

Chen is currently a student at the Munich Conservatory, studying with Ana Chumachenco and last year won second prize at the Premio Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition, in Gorizia, Italy.

Held every three years, the Henri Marteau Violin Competition was won by French violinist Fédor Rudin in 2014.

This year’s jury featured Gilbert Varga, Albena Danailova, Michael Frischenschlager, Erika Geldsetzer, Ilya Kaler, Nam Yun Kim, Silvia Marcovici, Igor Ozim, Kurt Sassmannshaus and Ingolf Turban.
